Thank you, Susie. We are truly lucky to have the Rachel Carson Wildlife refuges in Maine. I walk the one in Wells regularly, and that is where the poem began, as well as the artwork I made in her honor. She’s an inspiration!
I had my second shot 3 weeks ago and I’m feeling good. Hope you and yours are all fine.

With Rachel in Her Refuge


But man is a part of nature,

and his war against nature

is ultimately a war against himself.    – Rachel Carson



In this refuge named for you


trees topple now and lean


I see you in the shape of the land


your head to the east


your sea-combed hair


spread across the marsh


your mouth the river’s mouth


your hands the estuary’s fingers


patient for spring


waiting as the blowdowns


erode your sides, slide and pull


the very earth of you oceanward.


Returning like sea water


to salt pans, you wait


for the white-throat in the stillness


of snow falling on dry leaves,


wait for your voice to rise


through half a century’s abuse


into our time of wildfires


fracking    droughts    floods:


challenging man and his war


against nature once again,


a still small voice


still waiting to be heard.
